Stitch Itch and Christmas Shipping
Monday, December 14th, 2009Our third show in the Spotlight Gallery Series, the In Stitches Showcase, is about two and half weeks away from closing and I couldn’t let you get away with not checking it out! If you’re in the Chicago area you really should come over and take a look at all the beautiful work we have on display in the gallery. The pieces are incredibly affordable ($20 - $375) and perfect for gift giving - to loved ones who deserve a gift made with creative and attentive hands, or to yourself! I, for one, am a fan of the “one for you, one for me” strategy!
Being surrounded by all this stitchery has given me a serious itch for stitching. I’ve picked up the needle again! In case you’ve got a case of stitch itch too, check out these awesome kits by Chez Sucre Chez. They come with a hoop, floss, a needle, aida cloth, and an original Chez Sucre Chez pattern. She even throws in some instructions and an email address to send questions to.
Also, the 25th is just around the corner and tomorrow is the last day to purchase online and get your items before Christmas! Of course after tomorrow you can still buy online and cross your fingers. We always ship Priority Mail but we know the post office is just as crazy as we are in these last few weeks. So get to to shoppin’ so we can get to shippin’!

Spotlight Series #3: The In Stitches Showcase opened this past weekend and our little gallery is looking mighty spiffy all decked out with the incredible work of 15 stellar stitchers from across the nation and beyond! Yes, ladies and gents, we managed to hang 90 individual pieces without a single busted fingernail - how’s that for spot-on hammering precision!?!
The showcase will be on on view in our Spotlight Gallery through the new year, but you should hurry in right away to make your claim on that extra special piece (or pieces!) you can’t live without!
Not in Chicago?? You can now shop for these fabulous artworks in our online shop! We hope to keep the artwork on view for gasps, sighs, ooohs and awwws until at least December 15th - at which date we will ship your selection out to you just in time for holiday gift-giving! Feel free to email us with any questions!
We’ll be updating the blog soon with closer looks at some of the artists in the show - so be sure to stay tuned!
A BIG thank you to the lovely and talented Jenny Hart for hosting a special in-store workshop for those that purchased her latest book, Embroidered Effects! It was a true delight having Jenny in the shop and we had a fabulous time watching the participants hone their needle-crafty skills right there in our front window!
What a great way to spend a Saturday! Thanks again to each of the artists in the In Stitches Showcase, Jenny Hart, all of the workshop participants and everyone who turned out for the viewing party!

This is your last week to register for a special in-store workshop lead by the incredible Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching by purchasing her new book, Embroidered Effects, from our online store! We are officially one week away from the opening of Spotlight Series #2: Mike Perry’s Insound 10 Classic!
And YOU are officially invited to swing by Renegade Handmade, check out Perry’s awesome work + enjoy some free beer and wine!
Featuring all new limited edition silkscreen posters Perry has specially designed, the InSound 10 Classic tells a visual narrative of 20 years of punk, new-wave and indie music through the medium of the rock-poster and a contemporary-design lens.
Bands featured in Perry’s designs include; Richard Hell + The Voidoids, The Feelies, Beat Happening, Galaxie 500, The Magnetic Fields, The Promise Ring, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, Sleater-Kinney and The Promise Ring. Each of these fantastic designs were hand-printed locally in Chicago by the incredible artist behind each of our Craft Fair posters, Renegade’s beloved Mat Daly! Thanks Mat!

In addition to posters, we will have T-shirts and tote bags for sale featuring Perry’s original artwork.

Mike Perry is an award-winning designer specializing in hand-drawn type and graphic illustration working and living in Brooklyn, NY. Clients he has worked with include New York Times Magazine, Dwell Magazine, Urban Outfitters and Zoo York. His first book of typography, Hand Job, was published in 2006, with a second book, Over and Over, recently released!
For this project, Perry’s designs were commissioned by Insound.com and conceived ‘with the fan in mind - to provide new, creative products for those hungry for well designed products from bands that might not have much (or any) new merchandise in the market.‘
So whether you’re a fan of Perry, the bands featured, limited-edition silkscreen rock poster collecting, stellar contemporary design, free beer + wine, Renegade Handmade or ALL OF THE ABOVE - come on by Friday, October 30th, and join the celebration!

It has been so pleasant to be surrounded by the bright and cheery (and incredibly beautiful) drawings by Jill Bliss during the past few dreary days. We are so happy and honored that she could be our first artist for this series! Her works will be coming down one week from today so hurry over here and take a look if you haven’t seen the show yet!
It will be sad to see her drawings go - but don’t fret! There are many more exciting events on the horizon for the Spotlight Gallery!

Spotlight Series #2: Mike Perry’s Insound 10 Classic
The Insound 10 Classic is a visual narrative of 20 years (1977-1997) of punk, new wave & indie rock told through the medium of rock posters, specially designed by Mike Perry - one of today’s finest design, typography, painting + illustration talents! Bands showcased in the Insound 10 Classic include Richard Hell & the Voidoids, The Feelies, Beat Happening, Galaxie 500, The Magnetic Fields, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, Sleater-Kinney, and The Promise Ring. All silkscreened poster prints are signed & numbered and are limited to 125.

We are super geeked to announce that Jenny Hart will be in the shop on Saturday, November 21st to celebrate the release of her new book, Embroidered Effects, and help us celebrate the work of 14 stellar stitchers featured in our Spotlight Series gallery show, The In Stitches Showcase - opening that same weekend!
Jenny will be here to sign copies of her book, hang out with readers/stitchers and … lead a workshop for the first 15 people to buy the book from our online store! Hold your horses! The book will become available in our online shop on November 1st.

We are very pleased to share with you the first in our ongoing Spotlight Series exhibition project highlighting the spectrum of work from stellar craftspeople all over the nation!
First up is Portland-based artist Jill Bliss who we commissioned to paint a brand new mural just for our store!
On view + for sale are a handful of Jill’s gorgeous drawings and many of her handmade fabric + paper goods, which incorporate her original artwork into their designs!
The work will be here till mid-October and photos only partially do the work justice, so stop on by Renegade Handmade and check it out!

Reception Tomorrow : Spotlight Series #1: Jill Bliss + Life-Long Work-Week

What a week it has been + What a weekend it will be!!
We hope you will join us tomorrow night, Friday, September 11, from 6pm - 9pm for a special reception celebrating 3 fantastic artists who have been working OH SO VERY hard all week long right here in our shop!
Our latest crafty-crush, the fabulous JILL BLISS, has been a total trooper in our brand new Spotlight Series Gallery completing an incredible mural inspired by Midwestern wildlife, flora + fauna. We also have several of her amazingly detailed, vibrant drawings on display that look lovely up against our signature baby-blue walls! Don’t pass up the merch-table either, many paper + fabric goods featuring Jill’s original artwork + design are also for sale!!
Dynamic-craft-duo Chad Kouri + Jessie Brown have been working on some eye-popping, clever new designs in our storefront window as part of their Life-Long Work-Week! It’s been absolutely fascinating to follow their collaboration along as they complete their drawings, create stencils, burn-screens, pull screenprints - aye-yai-yai - these guys do it all and it’s all fantastic!
Meet the whole crew tomorrow night from 6-9pm at Renegade Handmade (1924 W. Division)!

Renegade Announces Spotlight Series + In-store Events!!

From Monday, September 7 - Friday, September 11 Renegade Handmade will be host to two special in-store projects!
We have transformed the backroom of our storefront into a sweet mini-gallery for our brand new Spotlight Series, an ongoing exhibition project highlighting the work of stellar craftspeople from all over the nation!
1st up is Portland-based artist + designer Jill Bliss, who will be on site painting a gorgeous new mural beginning Tuesday the 8th - the piece is being commissioned and created just for our storefront!! Jill will be painting the mural in-store and also will have several drawings and merchandise on display and for sale!
Also appearing all week at Renegade Handmade are artists Chad Kouri (of The Post Family) + Jesse Brown completing their Life-Long Work-Week!! For this special artists-in-storefront residency project, Kouri + Brown will be putting the collaborative crafting-process on full display - utilizing our storefront window as a studio for the creation of all new works to be sold at the Craft Fair!
We hope you will stop in anytime next week + join us Friday, September 11, from 6pm - 9pm at Renegade Handmade (1924 W. Division) for a reception celebrating these two projects!!
It’s all leading up to the 7th Annual Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago the weekend of September 12 + 13!!
