See + Shop Spotlight Series #1: Jill Bliss Online!

We are very pleased to share with you the first in our ongoing Spotlight Series exhibition project highlighting the spectrum of work from stellar craftspeople all over the nation!

First up is Portland-based artist Jill Bliss who we commissioned to paint a brand new mural just for our store!

On view + for sale are a handful of Jill’s gorgeous drawings and many of her handmade fabric + paper goods, which incorporate her original artwork into their designs!

While it’s certainly more accurate to describe Portland-based Jill Bliss as an artist, designer + indie-craft pioneer (indeed, she is all these things), we here at Renegade find ourselves imagining Jill as a gardener.  Perhaps this has as much to do with her nature-inspired artwork seeming somehow alive, buzzing with color + porous forms, as with her D-I-Y industriousness – persistently hand-making and selling an eclectic array of paper + fabric goods since 2001.

Raised on a farm in Northern California, and having lived + studied in New York + San Francisco, Jill epitomizes an emergent generation of craftspeople dedicated to self-representation and creative re-use, often utilizing recycled materials in many of her goods.

For her new mural (created specially for Renegade Handmade), Jill features imagery inspired by wildlife, flora + fauna (even insects!) native to the Midwestern landscape – like a botany illustration produced with a more colorful-than-usual imagination.
